There is a village called Longtan Dai and Yi Township in the southwest of Simao District, Pu'er City. Longtan Township is named after the underground river gushes from the foot of the mountain to form a natural lake, Longtan Lake.

Entering the village, you can see that women are wearing Dai-specific tube skirts, and each household has a hand loom. This kind of Dai dress is their own hand-woven, is a folk handicraft spread in the Dai people, with strong local characteristics and ethnic minority characteristics. The Dai people are also divided into Han Dai, Shui Dai and Huayao Dai. Their ethnic costumes are also different. The Dai people in Longtan Township belong to Han Dai.

Dai brocade is an ancient traditional manual textile technique. It creates exquisite pattern designs through skilled textile techniques. Most of them are monochromatic surfaces, with weft threads, and the organization of patterns is very rigorous. When weaving, women tie the pattern organization on the shuttle with thin threads one by one. The action of blocking the pedals with hands makes the warp threads form upper and lower layers and then begin to cast weft. After repeated cycles, they can weave very beautiful handmade Dai skirt cloth.

Its patterns are rich and colorful, with animal patterns of various rare birds and animals, grains and flowers, geometric patterns, etc. The patterns of peacocks, elephants, horses and so on represent auspiciousness, strength and harvest, while pagodas, monasteries and bamboo buildings embody the pursuit of a better life. To weave a piece of cloth, you need hundreds or even thousands of thin threads. The pattern is also expressed on the shuttle by lines. If you weave a thin thread incorrectly, the whole pattern will be disordered.

Under the guidance of my aunt, I also sat in the loom and tried, but my hands and feet did not listen to the instructions and did not move at all. My aunt stood by and laughed. It can be seen that this handmade handicraft still needs some basic skills, otherwise it is really difficult.

With the development of history, manual weaving has gradually been replaced by simple and easy-to-operate machines. Fewer and fewer people know this craft, and few people stick to it. I don't know whether people are trying to save more and more trouble or whether it is a necessary process for the development of the times.
