Dai people will be given a Dai name by the village's "dragon head " as soon as they are born, but this name is very common, and there will be many people with the same name in the village, because their Dai names are based on the sex of the child, the ranking of the brothers and sisters in the family when the child is born, and the ranking of the father of the child among the brothers and sisters in the family. Regarding "dragon head " , he must be male and the most respected person in the village. he must preside over and participate in all occasions and red and white matters in the villagers' life. Maybe everyone will be curious, what is the significance of the village cadres? Actually, there is no conflict. The things that "dragon head " presides over are generally things that should be carried out according to national customs, such as weddings, children's full moon wine, white things, sacrifices and so on. The person in this position is first elected by the villagers, and then the hereditary system starts, but it is not absolutely hereditary. When "dragon head " is old or feels powerless, he will organize the whole village men to carry out the transition ceremony, usually considering his son first. The highly respected old people in the village will give the candidate various test conditions handed down from their ancestors, such as birthdates, if all the conditions meet the requirements of the new "dragon head " , it will be decided. if not, they will have to elect the most qualified person from another large family to inherit. Usually, there is only one family in the village to choose from.
Dai girls have to have their ears pierced when they are very young. Even if they don't wear earrings, they have to hang them on the line to ensure that the earholes go straight through. When they get married, they start wearing heavier silver earrings until they get old. Therefore, many old people have their earlobes falling very long. Dai girls are recognized as watery, but when they are old, their faces seem to have more wrinkles than ordinary people, and the flesh on their faces hangs more severely. We all joke that they are tender when they are young and lack water when they are old.
Although the Dai people are free to marry now, there are still divorces. About ten years ago, the Dai people here could only marry the Dai people. The two Dai villages near our village add up to hundreds of families, and there is no divorced couple. Dai brides were married by their husbands who sent someone to "rob " . when they were young, they felt very scared when they got married, because the bride covered her face and snatched it motionless. there were also several bridesmaids who also covered her face. sometimes when she snatched it out, she found out that she was wrong and started snatching it again. Their dowry, food, clothing, housing and transportation are all complete, but their shares vary according to their economic conditions. They didn't change their clothes until they entered their husband's house, and then there would be a special "Buddha " (Dai people believe in Buddhism, Buddha is a Taoist monk, and the nearby Dai village would call him to chant sutras when he was married. Now Buddha lives in a village called Qianluo, and villagers usually take turns to provide him with food and drink) to chant sutras for the bride and groom. The bride and groom must kneel on their knees, it usually takes a few hours to finish.
The Dai people here can chat with strangers passing by for half a day. They also like to join in the fun. Everyone likes to get together when they have something to do. Everyone talks and helps. It sounds like we are still talking. After all, we don't understand what people are saying. Especially every year during the rice and corn harvest season, they will take the initiative to help each other. They know who will harvest rice today and drive their tractors. The host family cannot prepare meals early because they do not know how many people will come in total. The Dai people here are a group of people who have the most fertile farmland. In fact, they also suffered a lot about 60 or 70 years ago because of these fertile farmland. At that time, they liked to live by the water, the fields were close to the water source, and the houses were built by the river. However, they found that the villagers were more and more sick, and they would be terminally ill without warning. Later, they found that people far away from the river were less likely to get sick, so they gradually moved away from the river and the situation gradually improved. Every year in the fifth month of the lunar calendar, the Dai people go to the source of the river to pray for good weather, but women are not allowed to participate in these sacrificial activities.Dai people use cremation if they die, and there are no tombstones. The whole village has two fixed points for cremation, one for the normal death or illness of the elderly, and the other for young death.
