However, this scholar, who served as the chief editor of "Siku Quanshu" for more than ten years, wrote a very interesting book in his later years, which is comparable to Pu Songling's "Strange Tales from a Liaozhai.

The place where Pu Songling wrote his novels is called "Liaozhai", and Ji Xiaolan also has one called "Yuwei Cottage", so the name of his novel collection is also called "Yuwei Cottage Notes". Like Strange Tales from a Liao Zhai, this collection of classical Chinese novels mainly describes the stories of fox ghosts and gods, which is short and concise. The difference is that in the style of writing, there is a tendency to move closer to the simple and light style of the notes in the Jin and Song dynasties, which is quite "retro", but it is also quite different from the Liaozhai story with twists and turns and vivid characters. In addition, as a cultural leader, his original intention of creation was to "not be good at Fengjiao" and "beneficial to persuasion and punishment". There were many speeches to maintain the feudal moral system and promote karma. Therefore, although it was widely circulated in the upper society at that time, it was widely spread in the upper class at that time, but its influence among the common people was much worse than that of Liaozhai Zhiyi. Perhaps, this is like today's "pure literature" and "popular literature" difference.

However, although the theme tends to be orthodox and serious, there are still many interesting things in the Ji version of "Liaozhai. For example, criticizing the hypocrites who are full of righteousness and morality, full of male thieves and female prostitutes, laughing at the Taoists who can only talk, portraying the intrigue of officialdom, and so on, can be called a vivid picture of the world. In fact, some of the more "down-to-earth" stories in the book have long been widely circulated among the people, or have been changed, but most people will not explore their sources, such as the story of "hunting in the Tang Dynasty" and the story of salvaging and sinking stone lions in the river, which are very interesting to read. If put in now, Ji Daxue has the potential to become a "joker.

It is not uncommon for ancient masters to write strange little stories, not to mention "Strange Tales from a lonely studio", which has supported countless screenwriters today, such as "Soushen Ji" by Ganbao in the Jin Dynasty, "Yi Jian Zhi" by Hong Mai in the Song Dynasty, and "Zi Buyu" by Yuan Mei in the Qing Dynasty, are all masterpieces of well-known cultural history. However, as far as the author is concerned, these people are not as topical as Ji Xiaolan. Zhu Gui, a good friend of Ji Xiaolan, described in the epitaph he wrote for him: "First, the county was the old way for the nine rivers to enter the sea, while the rain made the ocean become a huge immersion, and there was a light monster in the water every night. The father of the prince dreamed that the light entered the building, and the public was born, and the light was hidden. People thought that the spirit of the public was incarnate." It is said that Ji Xiaolan's hometown used to have abnormal light sources in the water frequently. Ji's grandfather also dreamed that a light group entered his house. Then Ji was born and the strange things in his hometown disappeared. Because this thing was seriously written into the epitaph, there was a saying at that time that Ji Xiaolan was "the reincarnation of a fire spirit. Plus his distinctive personality-he loves to smoke, even in front of the emperor, he can't help being addicted. He loves to laugh but can't restrain himself. He loves to eat meat and even eat dozens of pounds of solar eclipse without entering the staple food. He loves to do things that can't be described... He doesn't look like a traditional literati with a sanctimonious appearance.
