In 1978 , Lao Gen Senior high school graduated and enlisted in the army. At the farewell party in the village, the villagers beat gongs and drums and pulled up the banner of "one soldier, the whole family is glorious". Lao Gen and his partners wore big red flowers on their chests and felt extremely honored. In one after another loud military songs, the villagers exhorted and sent them one after another.

After joining the army, it is three months of recruit training. A young man from the south suddenly arrived in Jilin's environment of minus 12, 30 and 13 degrees, and had to undergo a large amount of training. The degree of hardship can be imagined. The training ground was covered with thick snow and crunched on it. Although wearing a cotton hat and a cotton coat, as long as you stand for a while, a thick layer of frost will form on your eyebrows. However, when he thought of the oath he made when he was a soldier, "to be a soldier is to protect the country," he felt full of strength.

Recruits' training ended in

All the recruits were transferred to the front line of the self-defense counterattack against Vietnam and set off on the same day. Lao Gen was both excited and nervous. What was exciting was that he would truly realize his desire to defend his country; what was nervous was that he did not know what he was about to face. The next day, the recruits assembled with the troops at the Chifeng (now Inner Mongolia) railway station in Liaoning, waiting for the next order.

Chifeng Railway Station was already in a state of first-class combat readiness. The military flag was flying high, the slogan "Protect the Home and the Country" was everywhere, and the majestic military song was played on the horn, as if the air was filled with gunpowder. As soon as they arrived at the railway station, Laogen shaved their heads as required-they had no time to take care of their hair when they went to the front line. Except for a military uniform, all other items were packed and stored. The package was marked with the army number, name, blood type, hometown address, etc. In the evening, the instructor mobilized before the battle, and the team sounded majestic slogans from time to time: "Defend the motherland to the death, and resolutely not let an inch of land!" It was not easy to stay up until dawn, and suddenly there was news that the order to go to the front line was canceled and all the troops returned to the original road. Laogen suddenly seemed like a deflated ball, feeling that his whole body had no strength, and his comrades complained one after another. However, complaints are complaints. Military orders are like mountains and must be obeyed.

Although he failed to go to the battlefield, Lao Gen's military experience was not monotonous. He followed the troops in Inner Mongolia, Jilin and Liaoning.
