My Air Force Dad
Dad joined the army in 1970 . He was the maintenance battalion chief of the 91 regiment of an air force unit. His army was stationed in xintai city, Shandong Province. When I was five years old, my mother gave up her job as a primary school teacher and came to the army. As a result, I became an honorable "family member with the army" and grew up in the army family courtyard.
According to my mother's memory, when I was born, my father was studying in Xi 'an Institute of Engineering. On the night of my birth, he and his comrades were watching a movie called "Visitors on the Iceberg" when they suddenly sneezed twice. He and his comrades said, "Maybe my child was born". The next day I received a telegram from home. After the study, my father reported directly back to the army and went back to his busy work. He didn't ask for family leave until I was one year old. When I first met, I was already babbling and even could say the word "dad", but when I saw the strange man in front of me, I cried and refused to let him in. My father felt very guilty about this, but my mother didn't blame him at all. She said that since she chose a soldier as her husband, she had expected such a situation.
For as long as I can remember, Dad has always been extremely busy and is simply a workaholic. He put all his energy on the plane, and took his comrades in arms to organize flights, ensure flight safety, train new pilots, and complete major tasks assigned by superiors. In addition to working continuously during the day, I often have to fly at night, usually going home in the middle of the night, sometimes even missing for a few days. Often when I wake up in the morning, he has already gone to work; when he comes back from overtime at night, I have already fallen asleep. For him, home is his hotel. Because of his outstanding work, in 1986 , dad won the third-class merit medal from the division's political department.
The family hospital we live in is three kilometers away from the army station. The children go to the army children's primary school next to the barracks. There are only 80 students in five classes. There are only 14 students in my class, who speak Mandarin with different accents from all over the world. I go to school when I am younger than my peers. Every morning, I carry my schoolbag to catch the army's pick-up bus. If the army has a special task to arrange not to pick me up, I will walk to school with my brothers and sisters. Because dad is too busy, there is no time to send me. The army is located in a relatively remote mountainous area. It is also fun to climb over the mountains, see the scenery, and catch insects. Because of this, I exercise the character of independence from childhood.
Every summer vacation, the army will arrange extracurricular counselors for us, take us to visit airports and air-raid shelters, and let us experience the feeling of being a pilot in the cabin. Looking at the dense flight instruments, I was nervous and excited, and I still can't forget that feeling. There is also an air-raid shelter, located at the foot of the mountain next to the airport. Although the door is very inconspicuous, the space inside is so large. There are many planes parked neatly. The uncles are busy in an orderly manner. When they see us approaching, they all greet each other with a smile. What impressed me most was that the army organized to welcome the heroes who returned from the Laoshan front. At the airport, we held wreaths and put them on for the triumphant soldiers. Some of them were injured and still lying on stretchers, but when I handed them the wreath, I still nodded to me. Although I was only eight or nine years old at that time, all these made me admire and admire these most lovely people.
After changing jobs, my father has always demanded himself according to the standards of a soldier. His quilts will always be folded neatly like tofu pieces. He is as selfless, honest and rigorous as a soldier. When his hometown was hit by a flood, he fought the flood in his unit and stayed away for days and nights. After retirement, because his mother was in poor health, he took on most of the housework. My mother told me that when your father was young, he always neglected his family because of his work, but now he has to make up for it.
After I started a family, my father poured all his love into my children. Although his hair is white and his back is a bit hunched now, he still takes care of my children carefully and thoughtfully. "If you think the years are quiet, someone must be carrying your weight." Because of the support of my parents, I was able to work at ease.
I have a black-and-white photo of my father sitting on a fighter plane. In the photo, he is wearing a military uniform and looking ahead with a smile, spirited.
