If you bite it, the purplish red juice will slowly overflow, making the tip of your tongue light red, sweet in acid and refreshing!
For me, an authentic northerner, my early impression of bayberry was just a snack in the supermarket, a preserved fruit impregnated with salt or sugar. The year when I really ate fresh waxberry was the year when I first came to work at the peak. When waxberry was first listed, the laboratory master brought us a taste of fresh waxberry. The taste made me fall in love with it.
People around me don't like the rainy season, especially the northerners who are used to drying, but I have some expectations, because it is the mature season of bayberry! As once seen in a modern poem, "the fruit of the rainy season is bayberry".
With the arrival of the rainy season, the red bayberry is first light red, then dark red, and finally almost black purple. Gently bite it open, you can see the fresh red and tender pulp, lips, tongue at the same time stained with bright red juice. Myrica rubra, which is not ripe, is sour and sweet. When it is ripe, it is sweet. The more people eat it, the more they like it. But there is still a quietly hidden acid in this sweet. Once I ate bayberry, my mouth slipped and I ate too much. When I was eating, I realized that my teeth were sour and soft, and I couldn't even bite tofu!
"Green and Shade are covered with mountains and cities, and Dan is full of trees. If you don't like the fire on the plate, you'll be surprised to find Li Zhu." This is a sentence from Lu You's poem "In the Six Peaks, I See Picking Myrica rubra and Stay in the Mountains for Days. Imagine that scene, clusters of red agate-like red bayberry crowded side by side to hang all over the branches, in the context of green leaves, that how lovely! Fortunately, bayberry is a major characteristic fruit of Jinhua, especially Lanxi, which is adjacent to Jinhua, is the famous hometown of bayberry. In my spare time, I met three or two friends, carrying a basket, crossing the forest path, picking those lovely and delicious red bayberry, which is really unique!
Li Shizhen recorded in Compendium of Materia Medica that "bayberry can quench thirst, and the five internal organs, can clean the intestines and stomach, and get rid of vexation and evil spirit". However, although waxberry is delicious, it should not be stored for a long time, so I have learned a new method of making waxberry wine, and have prepared Jinhua's local tartary buckwheat wine, crystal sugar, and a number of large glass jars, just waiting for waxberry to get drunk in it!
